6th Conference RELIGION, KNOWLEDGE, SOCIETY (RKS)

Religious fundamentalism: causes, effects, solutions

9 December, 2019

Constanța (Romania)

Undoubtedly, one of the biggest challenge of contemporary society is the interaction between religions, between cultural identities with different social structural components. It is an incontestable fact that the globalization imposes new vectors in social dynamics, process that offers a frame of visibility a lot more transparent of the religious pluralism and, implicitly, of each religion's cultural profile. This reality trains a certain type of evidence of the diversity, but also of the identity in the cultural-religious plan of the world. Unfortunately, one consequence of this interaction is the display of religious exclusivism, in the form of religious fundamentalism. Religious fundamentalism is a complex phenomenon that creates the premise of religious conflicts and regrettable terrorist acts, that threatens to social stability and world peace. Fundamentalism Project define fundamentalism as a discernible pattern of religious militance by which self-styled "true believers" attempt to arrest the erosion of religious identity, fortify the borders of the religious community, and create viable alternatives to secular institutions and behaviors. Put in the context of modernity, fundamentalism is defined as a religiously based cognitive and affective orientation to the world characterized by protest against change and the ideological orientation of modernism. Fundamentalism is not simply a religious or political option from the perspective of faith. It is a transaction phenomenon marked by a succession of factors whose cumulative impact can be devastating.

The conference intends to offer an exhaustive and interdisciplinary analysis of religious fundamentalism from the theological, sociological, psychological perspectives, highlighting its causes, effects and solutions for its minimization through interreligious and intercultural dialogue.
